This research project contributes to current debates within entrepreneurship studies that aim to trace and address the subversive nature of entrepreneurial activity. It seeks to develop a more complete understanding of the ways in which this subversive nature manifests in the process of teaching and learning within the contemporary business school. In order to make sense of this process, we focus on the (re)production, negotiation and disruption of traditional normative boundaries as it unfolds during the social/spatial production of the business school. We discuss how a recent strand of experimental approaches to management education that foregrounds ‘relationally experienced’ learning, can sensitize us to the conflicts, emotional strains and uncertainties that are embedded in the fabric of entrepreneurial practice. Importantly, we put forward a notion of ‘subversion’ that is bounded up with these tensions – a quietly disruptive activity with significant creative potential, which – against both voluntaristic and structuralist theories – occurs often within the normative boundaries that it seeks to transgress. This case example represents an attempt to re-create the uncertain conditions faced by real-life entrepreneurship in order to set in motion – while also investigate closely – the students’ enactment of ‘subversion’, with some unexpected outcomes.
